Artist’s Statement:
After years away from the canvas, Maps of Emotion marks a return — not just to painting, but to feeling. This piece began not with a plan, but with a release: color poured out in instinctive gestures, textures colliding like memories resurfacing after being buried too long.
The work is a landscape of the inner world — a cartography of chaos, longing, reflection, and rediscovery. With thick impasto strokes, collaged fragments, and vivid, almost defiant hues, it charts an emotional terrain that is both personal and universal. Some areas are sharp and defined, others blurred and layered, like memories trying to find their voice.
At the center, a handwritten phrase appears: “Within the chaos, something true always tries to speak.” It’s not just a message — it’s a promise. It reflects the process of digging through inner noise to find that quiet, insistent truth. Returning to painting felt the same way — as if something unspoken had waited patiently to be acknowledged, to be seen.
Gold leaf emerges in parts of the canvas like buried treasure — unexpected moments of clarity or peace, rising from disorder. Each section of the painting suggests a different emotional province: joy, fear, hope, grief, desire — all coexisting, overlapping, speaking at once.
This is only the second painting since coming back, but it holds the weight of years. Maps of Emotion is less about navigating the world and more about learning to navigate the self — again.
